About The Series

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.  – 1 Timothy 6:17-18 (New International Version)

Extravagant LOVING is the Bridge Between Our Differences. Looking around we are all different; even in families we are different – we may share some similarities but the complexity of how God combines all our genes and DNA together means we are still different. In our community there is a lot of difference (and labelling which is not good), – we have some people with needs and some people with extra. Be Rich enables us to use our combined extra no matter how little to meet somebody’s need because we have been loved by God.

In the dictionary, difference is defined as the way in which two things being compared are not the same, another definition says it is the quality or state of being dissimilar or different. But being different should never be an issue, rather it is an opportunity to lean into one another and love one another. Thinking about Jesus and His ministry, you will notice that Jesus had conversations with people who did not get it, people who did not see the world like Him and His response was to lean in and love them.

Be Rich is an opportunity to remind the world that everybody matters to God whether God matters to them or not. Be Rich is based on a letter written by the Apostle Paul to a young man Timothy and it is from this letter we get the phrase Be Rich. Paul said,

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.  – 1 Timothy 6:17-18 (New International Version)

The phrase, “rich in this present world” most likely meant something very different in the first century from its meaning today. If you have extra time and extra resources no matter how little, then you are rich – and most of us have got some extra. God is commanding us to use our extra to be rich in good deeds, to use our extra to be rich with our generosity and to use our extra to be rich in our willingness to share.
