Blessed to be a blessing

Church is a great place to learn about how to love your neighbours. In our church, we are equipping people to pursue what we are calling the “BLESS” practices. BLESS is an acronym for five practices that we are teaching everyone in our church to learn in their relationships with their neighbours.

Each one of these practices is a simple way that we can show love to our neighbours. As we bless them, we are also opening up the opportunity for them to hear about the Good News of Jesus Christ and be transformed by His love.

B – Begin with Prayer

We believe that God wants to bless our relationships with our neighbours, and that prayer is the best place to start. As you pray for your neighbours, you will begin to see them through God’s eyes and develop a heart for them.

L – Listen to their story

Everyone has a story, and when we take the time to listen , we can learn so much about the people around us. As we listen, we also have an opportunity to share our own stories and build relationships of trust.

E – Eat with them

Sharing a meal is a great way to get to know someone better. It doesn’t have to be a fancy meal – even something as simple as coffee or tea can be a time to connect.

S – Serve them

Look for ways that you can serve your neighbours in practical ways. This could be anything from mowing their lawn, to babysitting their kids, to just being available to chat. When we serve, we show that we care about them and are interested in their wellbeing.

S – Share your faith

This is the natural next step in our relationships with our neighbours. As we get to know them better, we will have opportunities to share about our faith and what it means to us. We want to do this in a way that is respectful and sensitive to their beliefs, but also bold and confident in what we believe.

The bless practices

One of the best ways to love your neighbours is by teaching them about the BLESS practices. Each one of these is a simple way to show love and care, and provide an opportunity for your neighbours to learn more about the Good News of Jesus Christ. We hope that as you pursue these BLESS practices in your own life, you will be encouraged and inspired in your walk with Christ.

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” – Genesis 12:2-3
