A powerful example of the transformative power of God’s truth is evident in the inspiring story of Hien Pham, a devout Buddhist in Vietnam.

The belt of truth: knowing, enjoying and being governed by the truth of God’s Word in all of life

During the ‘Live no Lies’ teaching series, we delved into the significance of the Armour of God in equipping us for spiritual warfare. Among the pieces of spiritual armour mentioned by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6, the Belt of Truth stood out as a foundational piece, much like the first item a soldier would strap on. Just as the belt was crucial for a soldier, truth is fundamental for every believer.

In our journey as Christians, truth plays a pivotal role, especially when we face the relentless attacks of the father of lies. The truth that guards and strengthens us is found in God’s Word. It serves as a beacon of light, guiding us in discerning the deceptions that surround us and providing a firm foundation for our faith.

Hien Pham’s Conversions

A powerful example of the transformative power of God’s truth is evident in the inspiring story of Hien Pham, a devout Buddhist in Vietnam. In 1971, Hien received a Bible from an American soldier, sparking his curiosity and prompting him to seek answers about Jesus Christ and His love. Through the pages of the Scriptures, Hien discovered the truth that resonated with his heart, and he embraced Jesus as his Saviour with unwavering devotion.

Hien’s newfound faith led him to serve as a translator for the American military forces and missionaries. However, when Vietnam fell to the Communists, Hien faced imprisonment and endured a relentless campaign of indoctrination against Western ideals and Christianity. Isolated from English reading materials and bombarded with Communist propaganda, Hien began to waver in his faith. Doubt crept in, and he contemplated abandoning his prayers and renouncing his Christian beliefs.

Finding Truth In A Latrine

Yet, in a remarkable turn of events, God’s truth intervened in Hien’s life. While cleaning the latrines in the prison, Hien discovered a piece of paper with English writing on it hidden among the discarded toilet paper. Intrigued, he carefully cleaned it off and concealed it, eager to read it later.

Under the cover of darkness, Hien pulled out a small flashlight and began reading the words inscribed on the paper. To his amazement, it was Romans Chapter 8. As he immersed himself in the passage, the truth of God’s Word penetrated his soul. The words proclaimed that God works for the good of those who love Him, that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. Overwhelmed by the profound relevance of these words to his circumstances, Hien wept and sought God’s forgiveness for doubting His existence.

Nurturing Your Faith

From that day forward, Hien’s resolve to embrace God’s truth grew stronger. He requested to clean the latrines repeatedly, discovering that an official in the camp was using a Bible as toilet paper. Determined to preserve the sacred text, Hien diligently cleaned off portions of Scripture each day, incorporating them into his nightly devotional readings. Through this act of courage and reverence, he reclaimed a significant portion of the Bible and nurtured his faith even in the midst of persecution.

Truth In Adversity

Hien’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of God’s truth in our lives. In the face of adversity, doubt, and deception, God’s Word remains a steadfast source of strength and guidance. Just as the Belt of Truth secured the soldier’s armour, God’s truth secures our hearts and minds, enabling us to stand firm in the face of spiritual battles. May we, like Hien, embrace God’s truth and allow it to shape and empower our lives, for it is in the truth that we find freedom, assurance, and victory.
