We just wanted to let you know what has been happening in Morocco during this time. Hmad and I along with three others were due to have been there this last couple of weeks and obviously this was not able to go ahead. We have postponed our trip till October and hope that it will go ahead then but we need to be flexible.
The schools closed in Morocco just before those in the UK although they have much fewer COVID19 cases and indeed not many in the Khenifra province where we work. This is really good news. People are in Lockdown with only 1 family member allowed out to buy food. Many people work on a daily hiring basis resulting in having no money to feed their families and no help from the government as we have had amazing help in the UK.
We have put our teachers on furlough. Unfortunately, there is no online teaching available as in the UK. There is no infrastructure to do this meaning the children are just at home and must be missing the teaching, play and songs and love from our teachers.
Paying our teachers has proved difficult as the chairman who countersigned the payments from the bank account lives in Casablanca and is unable to travel to Khenifra which she did regularly. We also needed to continue paying rent and electricity for our preschool. We solved this by sending as a temporary measure, payments via Western Union. Through this, we have been able to pay our teachers for 2 months and also paid the rent and electricity.
We also had school bags being taken to the children by a charity who were going to drive to the villages in June but this has also been postponed. A friend had said he would run the Snowdon marathon in October to raise funds which we hope will still go ahead but again we are waiting and seeing what happens.
Thank you to all who are continuing to give regularly at this time, this is what enables us to keep our teachers able to feed themselves and their families and to keep the preschool building ready for when we can all go back so thank you all. You are all appreciated so much when we are all going through such an unprecedented time.
